John Woodhouse Sparrow – The man that many believe still haunts the lookout tower
Many believe that John Woodhouse Sparrow still keeps watch in the museum’s Lookout Tower. Sparrow, a Surfman at the Life-Saving Station for over 3 decades, was awarded the Silver Life-Saving Medal for his heroism in saving shipwreck victims. John retired to live within sight of his beloved station and passed away in 1935 at the age of 79. Since the museum opened in the 1980s, many sightings of a man in the Lookout Tower have been reported. Locals are convinced that Sparrow has returned to continue his duties.
