Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday. These are dates most of us have marked in our calendars, eagerly counting the days until we can eat that amazing home-cooked meal, or shop those deals we just can’t pass up. The end of November is a time of family, food, and fundraising.  Wait, fundraising?

Yes, that’s right. Fundraising. As we approach this holiday season, let’s remember the most important date of all – Giving Tuesday.

Giving Tuesday is a global movement that celebrates and encourages philanthropy during the holiday season. This year the Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum is raising funds to support our internship program. Internships are a vital part of the museum’s educational programming, helping young professionals transition into the workforce.  Over the last years, staff has re-designed and re-imagined the internship program to ensure it offers a solid platform for aspiring professionals to experience a real work environment.

From business management to content creation, the museum has internships designed to help develop all kinds of professional skills.  Heather, Clarissa, Jordan, Kristin. These are just a few of the interns who have been impacted by their time at the museum. For the next two weeks leading up to Giving Tuesday, I’ll be sharing their stories, as well as just how transformative our internships can be for both the interns and our museum.

Part of what makes our internships possible is community support. Your donation can ensure the successes of both our current and future interns. Through them, you will help create new educational programs and research new exhibits. Through them, you will support the management of our gift shop and organization of our archives. Your support of our interns will directly impact the growth of our museum and the preservation of Virginia’s coastal history.

As this holiday season creeps closer, keep us in mind.  Feast on that delicious turkey, celebrate that insane deal you found, and donate to our Giving Tuesday campaign to support our museum’s interns.
