Since Summer 2017, the museum has offered a Teen Volunteer Program. Local high school students spend part of their summer helping visitors explore our galleries. Cody has been with us from the beginning. Here’s what he has to say about his experience as part of the Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum team.

Hi! I’m Cody, a Teen Volunteer at the Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum.  I chose to volunteer after I went on the amazing historical Ghost Walk that the museum offers.

After my first day volunteering here, I knew that it was going to be fun. Duties I have performed include talking about the exhibits and answering questions that the guests had.  I was also offered the ability to become Lookout, the VBSRM mascot. I gladly accepted.

Through the eyes of Lookout I saw just how excited people of all ages can be. It was cool to see people realize that there are always memories worth making, whether it be taking a picture with a huge dog or learning the history of the area.

The work I have done at the museum has helped me learn to be interactive at work and at other volunteer positions. I expect that the skills learned at the museum will help me in day to day life, and I look forward to all there is to learn continuing in the Teen Volunteer program.

Cody is a homeschool student in Virginia Beach. His persistent interest in volunteering with us helped spark the creation of our Teen Volunteer Program. We’re excited to welcome him back this summer, along with a new group of enthusiastic Teen Volunteers!
